Herbert “Herb J” Jackson is a pioneer in the electronic dance music scene, known for his groundbreaking songwriting and influential contributions to the development of sour house music.

Born September 12, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, Jones grew up on Chicago’s South Side and was exposed to a variety of musical styles, from soul and funk to disco and rock. During his teenage years, he began experimenting with his DJing and electronic music production and quickly became a regular on the city’s underground music scene.

In the mid-1980s, Jones joined the band Phuture with his fellow DJs Spanky and Nathan “DJ Pierre” Jones. The trio’s experimentation with the newly developed Roland TB-303 synthesizer led to the emergence of a new style of “acid house” music that combined elements of house, electronic music and soft sounds, and TB-303 hypnotic.

After leaving his Phuture in the late 1980s, Jones continued to work as a DJ and producer, collaborating with many other artists on his electronic music scene. He was also involved in the community, working to improve the lives of residents of Chicago’s South Side where he grew up.

Since then, Jackson’s contribution to the development of acid and his house has been recognized and admired by music fans and historians alike. He has been interviewed for numerous documentaries on the history of dance music, and his work with Phuture continues to inspire a new generation of electronic musicians. Unfortunately, Jackson passed away on March 3, 2021 at the age of 58.
